Categorisation
[edit]I've started to categorise these. The convention I've used is that Supermarkets of X have their HQ or were founded in X. Supermarkets in Y operate in Y. Mr. Jones 14:17, 6 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Organisation
[edit]This page should be better organised, I think. Many of the major supermarkets are part of bigger (holding) companies. For example, the Dutch Ahold has no supermarkets with that name, originally includes the Dutch "Albert Heijn", but now has shares in, or owns supermarkets all over the world (look f.e. at http://www.ahold.com/aboutahold/companyprofile.asp).
OThers are situated all over the world (or a certain contintent), many probably also belonging to a bigger company (such as Spar, Safeway). Jeronimo 00:16 Jul 28, 2002 (PDT) Gotta tell ya, folks. I just don't get this one! I agree with the comment above. But, if you are going to have a list of supermarkets, should a differentiation between a supermarket and the large discount retailers. For example, by what definition is Wally Mart a supermarket? Is it because they sell food? K-Mart and Target sell food, but they are not on the list. Is Trader Joe's a supermarket? (It's a chain of markets, but are these supermarkets?) Anyway, just some thoughts. 206.15.46.129
Several Wal-Mart stores in the USA now have full grocery departments, they're called Wal-Mart SuperCenters now. K-Mart also tried something similar ("Super K-Mart") to less success. Although, since I think people tend to think of those stores as department stores first, grocery stores second, I'm not sure whether they should be listed on this page. On that note, I deleted Zellers from the Canadian list - they, to my knowledge, are just a department store and don't have any combined grocery stores like Wal-Mart. Kirjtc2 17:59, 18 Sep 2003 (UTC)
Sorry Kirjtc2 but I disagree with you. Kmart does sell a large number of groceries, not only Wal Mart, so they definately deserve to be here! And as for Zellers, I can assume like most people that you don't like Zellers, but regardless I love them and I have seen they are installing grocery sections just like Wal Mart. I have already seen one in Montreal and there will be 40 by the end of the year! J2rome 18 Sep 2003
I had a problem with listing the contents of a 17th c. Library, but what this has to do with an encyclopaedia i don't know ,looks more like a celebration of capitalist enterprises to me. What a lot of supermarkets we have. Hurrah!Norwikian 19:55, 7 Oct 2003 (UTC)
Delete this!
[edit]If we're just going to have a list (no brief descriptions), why not have Category:Supermarkets? Brianjd 07:39, 2004 Dec 16 (UTC) Can we delete the ones that have articles but no description here, so this page becomes a "to do" page (as many of the supermarkets have no article)? Brianjd 07:53, 2004 Dec 16 (UTC)
Convenience store
[edit]I think we should delete stores that categorized into convenience store, include 7-11, Watson. Please list convenience store here, then later we delete all from the article: 7-11, Watson, Roscoe x 10:51, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Assorted...
[edit]- What does Transnational mean? If it means branches in more than one country then I expect the list to be enormous. -- SGBailey 23:52, 2005 Mar 6 (UTC)
- Why in Transnational is Coop there rather than Co-op. -- SGBailey 23:52, 2005 Mar 6 (UTC)
- Why does Coop not list UK - See Co-op (supermarket)
-- SGBailey 23:52, 2005 Mar 6 (UTC)
Addition of Carrefour for Korea...
[edit]- I added Korea to Carrefour (and vice versa). I was wondering why it was ommited, because I acutally visited there. Here's the evidence. http://www.carrefourkr.co.kr/
Coop/Co-op/Some other spelling
[edit]I'm going to split all countries except Norway, Sweden, and Denmark from Coop, and relocate them under Co-op. Coop is different from Co-op; I don't know anything about the latter, so somebody with knowledge about Co-op has to take care of it.
- I don't think any of the other chains named Co-op, or Coop, are transnational. The Co-operative brand is certainly not (UK), nor is Coop (Switzerland). I have deleted all of them except the Nordic ones, as their only common bond is probably membership of the International Co-operative Alliance, rather than any direct link that would make them a transnational chain. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 23:25, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Regarding [1] [2] [3] - In his edits, user:Alanmak has effectively disregarded the neccesity to keep the list concise and simple, conveying only the immediately relevant information concerning the theme of the list. Hong Kong's status is sufficiently elaborated in the linked article. As for " Revert ridiculous edits if User:Inst. A company that operates in Hong Kong, Macau and China are not "transnational" or "international" " from his edit summary, companies that operate in any two, or all three of the followings - Hong Kong, Macao, and the rest of the PRC - are very often said to be international, as long as the most strictest sense of the English word international (pretty rare indeed) is employed and is implying that they're different sovereign states. A football match between the China PR and Macau teams is an international match. — Instantnood 21:53, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
List of chain stores
[edit]How about having a list of chain stores that are not actually supermarkets? In the United Kingdom, there are chain stores that are not actually supermarkets - to name a few, Greggs Bakery,Holland and Barrett health foods and Boots and Superdrug - that have articles in Wikipedia. a&p
[edit]Removed them from the International category, as A&P Canada and Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company have completely different ownership. 209.105.207.181 (talk) 07:31, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Minor erratum
[edit]Check Aldi: "Australia, Austria (branded as Hofer), Australia" (Australia listed twice) (M)
This needs a fix
[edit]This “article” is just awful. There are obvious omissions. I propose someone either rewrite the article providing number of stores to prove a chain’s worthiness to be on the list or just delete the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.109.11.180 (talk) 00:36, 22 October 2010 (UTC)
